Tavira town, East Algarve

Tavira, 6km from Cabanas, is arguably the Algarve's most picturesque town. You can wander around this traditional Portuguese town with ease, stopping at one of the many cafés and restaurants. Children are welcome in all Portuguese cafés.

The River Gilão runs through Tavira and you can reach either side via the Roman bridge. It's a delightful place to be, full of charm, cobbled streets, and river views.

A cultural, historical, and tourist centre, Tavira has a Moorish castle, a museum and art gallery, and a redeveloped market selling local craft. If you would like to know more about Tavira, there are organised tours.

Buses run from Tavira to Cabanas and back each day, if you prefer not to drive.

Eating and drinking in Cabanas & Tavira

You'll relish sampling the wide variety of dishes served by the restaurants, cafés and bars in Cabanas. You can enjoy a lazy lunch by the waterfront or dine there in the evening and watch the sun set over the calm, blue waters of the Ria Formosa.

Cabanas is a former fishing village and has retained its Portuguese charm. The seafood is so fresh, and there are shellfish of all kinds, squid, and a huge variety of tasty fish served with vegetables or rice and of course, a Portuguese wine to suit whatever pallet you desire.
